Matte and satin PPF: living with it, and why matte paint needs matte film
Factory matte paint needs a satin film, because clear gloss film turns it shiny. Satin film can also turn gloss paint satin without a repaint. Either way, the surface cannot be polished, hard-water spots show sooner, and wax or gloss enhancers make it patchy. Wash it often, with matte-safe products.
Two reasons to choose satin film
The first is protection. Factory matte paint cannot be polished when it is marked, and it is hard to repair in a way that matches. Satin film takes the marks instead, and keeps the finish the car came with.
The second is a change of look. Satin film over gloss paint gives a satin car without a repaint. Take the film off and the gloss underneath comes back.
Why gloss film ruins matte paint
Matte paint looks flat because its surface scatters light. A clear gloss film puts a smooth, shiny face over that surface, and the car reads as gloss, or as patchy gloss where the film ends.
So the film has to carry the finish itself. That is what a satin film is for.
Living with it
Satin asks a little more of you than gloss. None of it is hard, but all of it matters.
- Never polish it. Polishing flattens the texture and leaves a shiny patch.
- Use a matte-safe soap, with no wax, gloss enhancer or glaze in it.
- Wash it more often than you would a gloss car, and dry it rather than letting water evaporate.
- Take droppings and sap off promptly. They etch faster than you expect.
- Skip automatic brush washes.
Winter salt and hard water
Salt brine and hard water dry into spots, and spots show on satin sooner than on gloss. Through the winter, rinse the salt off often, and do not let brine dry on the panels.
If spots are already there, a matte-safe water-spot remover is the right tool. A polish is not.
ARK’s satin film
Umbra is ARK's satin film, for both buyers: the one protecting factory matte paint and the one turning gloss paint satin. Umbra is a working name. See Umbra.
Ask the installing shop which wash products it recommends for the film it fits, and follow that.
The honest limit
It cannot be corrected with a polisher
A satin surface cannot be polished, so a mark that does not heal stays until the film on that panel is replaced. If you want a car you can correct with a polisher, satin is the wrong finish.
