Colour PPF vs vinyl wrap: what is actually different

Both change the colour of the car. A vinyl wrap is a thin colour skin that does little against stones. Colour PPF is a urethane protection film with the colour in it, so the restyle and the protection are one layer. If you change colours often, vinyl can be the better choice.

What each one is

A vinyl wrap is a thin, comparatively rigid film made for colour and graphics. It changes how the car looks and was never designed to take stones.

Colour PPF is paint protection film, made of urethane, with the colour carried in the film itself. It has the same job as clear film, plus a new colour.

Protection

Vinyl offers little against stones, so a hard strike can still chip the paint underneath. A stone that hits colour PPF leaves its mark in the film, the way it does with clear film.

Spectrum's own thickness is ⟨ pending measurement ⟩, so we do not say how much thicker than vinyl it is.

The surface

A protection film’s top coat closes light swirls with warmth. Vinyl generally does not, so wash marks on a wrap tend to stay.

How the top coat heals, and what it never fixes, is its own guide. How self-healing film works.

Seams and edges

Both show seams on complex panels. Coloured film shows every edge and relief cut that clear film hides, because the paint colour shows wherever the film stops.

Urethane is also thicker and stretchier than vinyl to work with, so colour PPF takes a shop experienced with coloured film. Look at that shop’s finished cars, edges and seams first.

Changing your mind

Both come off, professionally, back to the factory colour. Vinyl is made to be changed, and it is the lighter commitment if you like to change the colour of your car often.

Colour PPF suits the owner who has chosen a colour and wants the paint underneath protected while they live with it.

When vinyl is the better choice

Recommending against our own film is part of an honest answer. Vinyl wins when:

  • You change the colour of the car often.
  • You want printed graphics or a design, not a single colour.
  • You will keep the car a short time and protection matters less than the look.

ARK’s colour film

Spectrum is ARK's colour film. Colours published when the book is final. Ask the installing shop to show you a finished panel in the finish you are considering. See Spectrum.

The honest limit

We cannot show you the colours yet

The colour book is not final, so this guide cannot tell you which colours Spectrum comes in, or how many. Until it is, judge a colour film from a real panel at a shop, in daylight, not from a photo.
