Guide · For car owners
Does paint protection film turn yellow?
Film can yellow. It comes from the film’s chemistry and its adhesive, not from how it was installed, and it shows first on white and silver cars. Yellowing is one of the problems ARK was engineered against, and the ARK warranty lists it as covered. We publish no number for how long a film stays clear.
Why some film yellows
Paint protection film is made of urethane. Sunlight breaks some urethanes down, and the breakdown shows as a warm, yellow tint. Older formulations were prone to it. Newer ones are built to resist it, which is why the same question gets different answers depending on which film someone fitted.
The adhesive is the second path. An adhesive that oxidises can tint the film from underneath, even when the top coat is fine.
Why white and silver cars show it first
A faint colour shift is invisible over black paint and obvious over white. The film can be the same on both cars. The paint underneath decides whether you see it.
That is also why a careful installer will tell you to look at a panel in daylight, beside an unfilmed panel, before deciding anything.
What looks like yellowing but is not
Road film, tar and exhaust soot settle into the top coat and can read as a tint. So can stains from sap or droppings left on too long.
A proper wash and a gentle decontamination tells you which it is. If the tint washes out, it was dirt. If it stays, and it is even across the panel, it is the film.
What ARK says, and what it does not
Yellowing over time is one of the four problems the engineers behind ARK set out to fix. That is what the film was built against. It is not a measured result, and we do not present it as one.
The warranty is where the promise lives. It lists yellowing as covered, the term is 10 years on every film, and it transfers with the car. Read the warranty.
We publish no service life, because none has been measured. A number without a measurement behind it is the kind of claim this site does not make.
If you think your film is yellowing
Wash the panel first. Then photograph it in daylight next to a panel without film, and note the date.
Take the photos to the shop that installed the film. The claim runs through that shop to ARK, and a dated photo is the most useful thing you can bring.
The honest limit
What nobody can tell you yet
No spec sheet tells you how a film will look after years of sun on your car. Accelerated tests help, but they are not your driveway. ARK has not published one, and we will not quote a figure until a measurement exists.
